Heartbreaking Loss: Michael Easton Remembers Wings Hauser with Emotional Tribute

The soap opera world is mourning the loss of a true original. Actor Wings Hauser, beloved by many in the daytime television community, has passed away — and the news has left many heartbroken, including General Hospital star Michael Easton, who shared a deeply personal tribute to the man who gave him his first break in front of a camera.

Easton took to social media to express the profound sadness he feels, calling Hauser’s passing a moment that weighs heavily on his heart. Before Easton became a staple in the soap world—known for his work on Days of Our Lives, One Life to Live, Port Charles, and General Hospital—he was a young actor with no on-camera experience, struggling to find his place in the industry.

In a touching recollection, Easton revealed that it was Wings Hauser who saw something in him and gave him his very first acting job on a low-budget feature film titled Cold Fire. Hauser not only starred in the film but also directed it, taking a chance on an inexperienced actor who had only worked in New York theater.

“If any of you have seen my work in this movie, I am very sorry,” Easton joked with humility. “Until then, all I had done was theater in New York, and it was my first time working in front of a camera. I had no idea what I was doing.”

He vividly recalled the moment that changed his life: sitting in a casting office among dozens of other hopeful actors when Hauser passed by and casually asked, “Can you act, kid?” Easton confessed that he lied and said yes—an impulsive decision that launched his career.

Hauser, himself a veteran of the daytime world—having played Greg Foster on The Young and the Restless—clearly had an instinct for talent, even if it was still raw. Alongside Easton, he also cast Kamar de los Reyes as Easton’s half-brother in the same film. This decision would spark a lifelong friendship between the two men, long before they would share the screen again as castmates on One Life to Live.

Easton painted a vivid picture of those early days: a film shot on a shoestring budget over just 11 days, long nights of work followed by even longer nights of bonding. Neither he nor Kamar owned a car, so they relied on a motorcycle or the bus to get around Los Angeles. They stayed in a producer’s empty apartment in Chinatown—while the producer was conveniently out of town—and survived on little more than Pop-Tarts and beer.

“It was the kind of movie that even the producer didn’t want to be around,” Easton joked, reflecting fondly. “We’d scrape together enough money to buy a box of Pop-Tarts and a six-pack of beer, and we’d sit on the fourth floor fire escape and just talk until the sun came up.”

Though the film itself may have faded into obscurity, the experience left an indelible mark on Easton’s life and career. “It’s a time in my life I’ll always remember,” he said. “And Wings is someone I will never forget.”

More than just a mentor, Hauser was a kind-hearted figure who taught Easton not just about acting, but about life. “He was a true original. Wings was always kind to me, and I learned a great deal about acting—and more importantly, about life—from him.”

As news of Hauser’s passing continues to ripple through the soap opera community, Michael Easton’s tribute stands as a powerful reminder of the ways in which one person’s belief in someone else can shape a lifetime. He closed his message with heartfelt words that echo the sentiment of many fans and friends:

“My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and all his fans. Rest in power.”
